Conventions of Film Noir- we looked on the internet to get ideas and familiarise ourselves with these typical conventions which we would have to be able to put into practice when making our own film.

Iconography:
police chases, cars, guns, weapons, high heels, lipstick, trilbies, smoking, alcohol, cigars, neon lighting.

Style:
 Shadows on faces eg. horizontal shadows of window blinds, shows dark and inhumane side of human nature, deep-focus camera work, expressionistic lighting, murky, grey, blacks and whites.

Setting:
urban setting eg. LA, San Francisco, New York  and Chicago, City presented as labyrinth or maze, industrial setting, bars, lounges, night-clubs, gambling dens, mainly set at night and in the rain.

Narrative:
frequently involve flashbacks, film noirs tend to usually convolute storylines, classic noir is generally associated with first person narrative, voiceover is used as a structuring device, storyline.

Characters:
hardboiled detectives, femme fatales, corrupt policeman, jealous husband, private eyes, commentators.

Themes:
Greed and jealousy is frequently the criminal motivation, a crime investigation by a private eye, false suspicions and accusations of crime, revolve around heroes, urban setting and a few cities.
